Forest School

"Learning beyond the classroom – growing in confidence, independence, and a love of nature."

Forest School is a unique and inspirational approach to outdoor learning that nurtures children’s emotional, physical, and social development. Rooted in a Danish philosophy, it encourages exploration, creativity, and teamwork through hands-on experiences in a woodland environment.

At Docking Church of England Primary Academy and Nursery, Forest School is an integral part of our curriculum. Through regular outdoor sessions, children are inspired by nature as they participate in meaningful activities that support:

  •        Independence
  •         Confidence
  •         Communication Skills
  •         Self-esteem

Children who attend Forest School often develop strong social skills, become effective team players, and build high levels of self-confidence. These qualities help create a solid foundation for academic success and enhance classroom learning by bringing the National Curriculum to life.

What to Expect at Forest School

Forest School sessions take place outdoors in all weather conditions, so it is essential that children are dressed appropriately. On Forest School days, please ensure your child:

  •         Wears weather-appropriate clothing
  •         Brings wellies for outdoor activities
  •         Arrives in clean shoes for indoor use
  • Activities include:
  •         Shelter building
  •         Bug hunting
  •         Den making
  •         Knot tying
  •         Wildflower meadow creation
  •         Gardening and growing projects
  •         Rope ladders, hammocks, slacklines & tree climbing
  •         Campfire cooking and storytelling
  •         Tool use for woodcraft (e.g., knives, bow saws – under supervision)

Many activities are child-led, based on their curiosity and interests, making each session engaging and unique. All activities are thoroughly risk assessed, and staff ensure that every session is both safe and enriching. Tools and fires are used under close supervision, and children are taught how to manage risks responsibly.
