Sports Premium:

Sports Premium (also called the PE and Sport Premium) is extra government funding given to primary schools in England to help improve the quality of physical education, sport, and physical activity for all pupils. The DfE guidance on Sports Premium can be accessed here.

What the funding is for:
The aim is to make sure children are active, healthy, and able to enjoy a wide range of sports. Schools must use the money to make lasting improvements to their PE and sport provision.

How schools use the funding:
Schools might use the Sports Premium to:

  • Hire specialist PE coaches or provide training for teachers

  • Offer more sports clubs, activities, and competitions

  • Improve playgrounds or buy new PE and sports equipment

  • Support active playtimes and encourage more daily physical activity

  • Develop swimming confidence and skills

What parents should know:

  • The funding is for all pupils, not just those already interested in sport.

  • Schools must show how they spend the money and how it increases activity levels or improves PE provision.

  • The focus is on creating improvements that continue even after the funding is gone.
